Leigh Miners slipped down to third in the NCL after a disappointing second half performance that saw leaders Thatto Heath run out comfortable 34-8 winners at Close St yesterday. In what was a tight first half with both teams with high completion rates it was the home side who opened the scoring after about ten minutes scoring under the posts to give them a 6-0 lead. Miners responded with a good spell of pressure but with Thatto defending strongly they kept out until the half hour mark when Scott O’Brien’s cross field kick found Tom Bradbury who scored out wide on the left to bring the score to 6-4. From the kick of Miners switched off and let the ball bounce out of play and from the resulting scrum Thatto increased there lead on the second play to give them a eight point cushion at 12-4, and that’s how the score stayed as both teams went into the half time break.
The game was settled within the opening two minutes of the second half with Thatto kicking off the half they scored from the kick off after a total mess up by Miners the home side regained possession to score on the right to put them 18-4 in front. The next set Thatto were rewarded a penalty and from that they worked there way up field to score again to put them in command with a 22-4 advantage. Miners got there second try on the hour mark when prop Craig Conner scored to make the score 22-8 but that’s as good as it got for Miners as Thatto run in two further tries to win the game 34-8 and record there second comfortable victory over Leigh Miners this season.
Next week Miners are away to West Hull in a rearranged NCL game.
