The Super Eights arrived with a bang as the champions elect, Castleford Tigers, welcomed a St Helens side striving for a top four finish and a berth in the play-offs.

Remarkably, Matty Smith was back in the Saints line-up after suffering an horrific eye injury in the way game at Leeds Rhinos at the end of June. The Tigers were mostly unchanged with Grant Millington back in the starting line-up and a couple of changes on the bench.

A win for the Tigers would put them just two points from the Minor Premiership, a win for Saints would lift them into third spot ahead of the rest of the round being completed.

Both Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils will be missing the services of key personnel going into their opening Super Eights fixtures this coming weekend.

The RFL disciplinary had charged Warriors hooker Sam Powell for a ‘cannonball tackle’ and Lama Tasi with a ‘hit with the ‘shoulder’ during last weekends Challenge Cup semi-final game at the Halliwell-Jones.

After being forced to wait over the weekend to start making arrangements the Kingstone Press Championship Shield fixtures have now been fully released.

The delay in the release was due to the RFL awaiting the outcome of a ‘winding up order’ issued against Swinton Lions by HMRC for unpaid taxes. It is understood that this matter was resolved on Friday night to ensure that Swinton would be able to honour their fixtures to the end of the season.

There were two charges and a caution to come out of the weekends Ladbroke’s Challenge Cup semi-finals, and both were from the hard fought game between the Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils.

Wigan’s Sam Powell was charged, and Frank-Paul Nuuausala received a caution, while Salford’s Lama Tasi also found himself with a charge from the Red Hall disciplinary committee.

With Hull FC having already booked their passage to Wembley, attention switched to the Halliwell-Jones Stadium in Warrington where the Challenge Cups most successful side were up against a team who have not made the final in forty-eight years, and who haven't lifted the trophy since 1938.

Salford Red Devils came into the game from a higher league position, and after having shared the spoils with Wigan Warriors during the opening twenty-three rounds of Super League with one win each, all indications were that it should be a close game.

But Warriors came into the game as clear favourites with the bookies and most commentators expected that they'd be the ones who would be joining the Airlie Birds to fight for the first silverware of the season.

The first Ladbrokes Challenge Cup semi-final saw the cup holders Hull FC up against the trophy winners in 2014 and 2015, the Leeds Rhinos. The Airlie Birds were slight favourites with the bookies for the game, in front of a sell out Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.

Rhinos coach Brian McDermott had rung the changes from the youthful side that lost heavily to Wigan Warriors last weekend in bringing back nine regular first teamers, but Hull were unchanged from the side that beat the Huddersfield Giants last time out.

Leeds won the meeting between the two sides at Headingley a fortnight ago by 10-7, and by 52-24 in mid-April in Hull. But this was Cup, it was Super League's second against third, and all expectations were of a cracker.

The RFL was due to publish the entire Championship Shield fixture list on Wednesday morning but ‘operational issues’ mean that this has not been possible. This could be down to ground sharing issues with those sides who share with football or another RL side or issues with travel arrangements for the sides who have to travel to away fixtures in Toulouse.

The full list will now be issued on Monday but the opening round has been released now and includes a home game for the Bradford Bulls against Shield favourites Toulouse Olympique XIII. A loss for the Bulls will effectively see them relegated to Championship One for 2018.

So we’ve reached the great divide, and the split into five divisions has taken place. But what actually happens now?

It's pretty complicated but we will try to simplify it here to assist your enjoyment over the rest of the season, and hopefully spike your interest in what is going on in the competitions where your own club doesn't have a direct interest.

Across five new competitions there is everything to play for.

With Hull KR, London Broncos and Featherstone Rovers already secure in the Middle Eights competition, all eyes were on Halifax and Toulouse to see who would join them to play against Warrington, Catalans, Leigh and Widnes.

Toulouse welcomed Featherstone to the south of France on Saturday knowing that they needed to win, and then hope that Halifax failed to get a point at home against Hull KR.

London ended the regular part of the season against Batley while the other sides were jostling for position. Swinton visited Bradford, Sheffield were at Dewsbury and there was a Pennine derby as Oldham took on Rochdale.

The last game before the split into the Super Eights for the runaway leaders Castleford Tigers saw them take their hoard of fans to the south of France sunshine for a game against the Catalans Dragons.

The league leaders could go ten points clear of the chasers with a win, just two wins away from securing the Minor Premiership with seven games to play. The home side had nothing to play for but pride and a little bit of form going into the Middle Eights competition where they will be fighting for their Super League survival.

Castleford were the strong favourites with the bookies but the partisan home crowd hoped that they were wrong and that their side could spring a surprise.

A vastly weakened Leeds Rhinos side with one eye on next weekend’s Challenge Cup final against Hull FC made the trip over the Pennines to take on a strong looking Wigan Warriors side who are also in Cup action against Salford Red Devils a week on Sunday.

The bookies gave the second placed Rhinos absolutely no chance of taking the two points, and handed them a twenty point start on the coupon, despite the Rhinos winning the game at Headingley earlier in the season by 26-18.

A win for the Rhinos would come close to killing off and aspirations that eighth placed Wigan might have of a top four finish, but a home victory would put them right in the mix.

The opening game of round twenty-three of Super League, the last before the split into the Super Eights, saw a dead rubber game between two sides who were simply looking for form going into the middle eights competition.

Warrington Wolves were guaranteed ninth spot and four home games, while Widnes were likely to finish eleventh and couldn't manage any better.

The Wolves won the game in Widnes back in April by 19-10, and their home game in the cup by 34-20, but both sides wanted the confidence boost that a win would bring.

First versus third for the Sky Friday night fixture, that would either extend Castleford’s lead at the top of the table or guarantee a top four slot for the Devils moving into the Super 8’s. The pressure was certainly on Salford having lost four from their last five, could they bounce back from a heavy defeat at Headingley the week before? A dry start promised a fast game perfect for the Greg Eden to add to his try scoring tally for the season.

With the end of the first phase of the league only one week away it promised to be a competitive game. It was an opportunity for Salford to steady the nerves going in to the Super 8’s
